My story is about our gorgeous golden retriever, Khari. She is now 12 years old and the most placid golden oldie you’ll find. Khari is definitely a huge part of our family, so when our happy go lucky girl was found to have thyroid cancer in October 2021, we were referred to the specialist team at SASH. I knew we were in good hands from my families previous experience at SASH and our regular vet had said “they are the best”. Early November Khari had an operation to remove the lump. Next was a needle biopsy of her liver and spleen and to pin-point for radiation. Radiation and chemotherapy started at the end of November. It was tough taking her there every day for four weeks, Monday to Friday but what gave me hope and calmed me was the beautiful nurses and doctors who you knew were there as they loved what they did and wanted the best for your fur family member as well. Khari also met some lovely fur friends along the way. She would wag her tail as she went off happily. That same greeting for me was there when I picked her up. Last day of radiation was Christmas Eve 2021!!! It was the best Christmas… We had Khari and she had made it through her radiation treatment with her beautiful temperament, graduation cap and certificate.
Sadly in January, Khari ended up back in SASH for a week with pancreatitis and having her gall bladder and spleen taken out and a stent put in for the bile to flow. Chemo had to stop and it was a hard struggle for her but Khari was determined she wasn’t going anywhere. We then faced a new hurdle as the stent got blocked. Khari had good and bad days until eventually the stent came out and ever since she has been improving constantly. It was definitely the right decision for Khari and my family to have her here with us. We are now about to celebrate Christmas 2022 and that would not be possible if it wasn’t for all the expertise and love given to Khari from everyone at SASH. Special mention to Dr Elias, Dr Lucy, Nurse Charmaine, Claire and everyone at SASH.
