Planning a barbeque this coming long weekend? Each year, SASH 24/7 Emergency Vets sees dozens of life-threatening food-related cases during the Australia Day long weekend.

Make sure to keep the following out of reach of dogs:
🌭 Fatty food, e.g. sausages and BBQ meats – can cause pancreatitis, a dangerous inflammation of the pancreas
🍗 Skewers & cooked bones – can become lodged in the gut and/or cause a perforation
🍇 Grapes & sultanas – can cause kidney injuries and failure

Be sure to dispose of food waste in a way that is hard for your dog to access. Common presentations at SASH Emergency involve dogs finding creative ways to access bins.

If your pet has eaten something it shouldn’t have, immediate vet treatment can be life-saving or prevent the need for hospitalisation/surgery.

One of these babies had the pleasure of eating the forbidden food....one of them didn't.....

Meet Lily and Molly, who managed to sneak past their Nanna, and gorged on fruit mince tarts, chocolate croissants and a bag of wraps. But as their Nanna wasn't sure which one was the culprit, both Lily and Molly made a trip to SASH Emergency Western Sydney, where they were given medication to bring the hazardous foods back up. Poor Molly (on the left) was innocent!

Fruit mince tarts contain sultanas which can cause kidney failure in dog and if consumed in large quantities can be life threatening. Chocolate is also toxic to dogs and can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, seizures and heart problems.

This Green Sea Turtle was brought to the Taronga Wildlife Hospital by Marine Wildlife Rescue after a snorkeler noticed it had a hook in its left flipper. The Turtle also had fishing line tangled around its right flipper and had swallowed some fishing line. While the line around the flipper was removed by rescuers, the hook and swallowed line remained.

A well known turtle around the Cabbage Tree Bay area dubbed ‘Brownie’, the Turtle had previously been a patient at Taronga’s Wildlife Hospital when a local was concerned about algae growth on its shell. After a brief stint at the hospital, the Turtle was released back to the wild.

This time around, with the more serious hook injury and swallowed fishing line, Taronga’s vet team reached out to our friends at SASH Northern Beaches. Together with SASH Radiologist Dr Andrew Adezio, Medicine Specialist Dr Amy Dixon, and Nurse Nova, Taronga’s Vet Frances and Vet Nurse Liz performed an ultrasound, CT scan and endoscopy to determine the extent of any internal injury. The hook in the flipper was also removed under anaesthetic.

The Turtle is currently in intensive care at the Taronga Wildlife Hospital. Using a contrast x-ray, our expert hospital team are carefully monitoring the Turtle to determine if it can pass the fishing line naturally or if it will require surgery.

The Turtle will continue to remain in care. Once assessed to be back to health, Brownie will hopefully be able to return back to the ocean.

While Brownie was lucky to be found by a caring individual and able to receive treatment by Taronga’s team, not all wildlife are as fortunate. Hooks and swallowed fishing line can often lead to fatalities. By taking simple steps such as taking fishing line and hooks with you, disposing of them responsibly, and picking up waste when you’re next out on the water or at the beach, you can help to protect and care for wildlife in our shared spaces.

Introducing Prof Peter Irwin BVetMed PhD FANZCVS M

Introducing Prof Peter Irwin BVetMed PhD FANZCVS MRCVS, Specialist in Canine Medicine from SASH Sunny Coast.

Prof. Peter Irwin is a highly accomplished veterinarian, researcher, and registered specialist in canine medicine. A graduate of the Royal Veterinary College, London University, he earned his PhD from James Cook University for his studies on canine babesiosis. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and has completed residency training at the University of Melbourne, with placements at Cornell University, North Carolina University, and Massey University. With over 30 years of experience as a clinical academic in Australia and overseas, Prof. Irwin has taught companion animal medicine and conducted extensive research in veterinary parasitology and medical microbiology. An internationally recognised expert in vector-borne diseases, his current research focuses on tick-borne infections affecting companion animals, wildlife, and humans in Australia. He also holds the esteemed title of Emeritus Professor at Murdoch University, reflecting his contributions to veterinary science.

Prof Peter is a purr dad to Cosmo, a lively Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Olive, his much-loved elderly cat.
