Interested In Learning About Life Working At SASH?

The prestigious intern program at SASH will provide you with an opportunity to work with a variety of our experienced specialists to provide care to our patients and their families over a 12-month period. This program offers you a structured learning opportunity giving you access to a varied case load with the support of the wider SASH team.

The rotating internship is designed to further develop your skills in a range of disciplines, with a goal of preparing you for a future residency, if you choose to do so. The SASH rotating internship is truly rotating, spending time with specialists in medicine, surgery, neurology, radiation/medical oncology, ophthalmology, anaesthesia, exotics, as well as the emergency and critical care service. There are varying levels of case responsibility and plenty of opportunities to learn from registered specialists in these fields.

Interns participate in weekly didactic seminars, journal clubs, and morbidity and mortality rounds. We provide support for candidates wishing to sit their ANZCVS membership exams. We encourage our interns to submit journal publications and present at prestige conferences such as ANZCVS Science Week and speciality international conferences. Graduates from the SASH rotating internship have gone on to pursue highly competitive residencies locally and internationally in all specialities.

I had a great time during my rotating internship at SASH. It is one of the few ‘true’ rotating internships available in the country; you get a taste of almost every speciality and sub-speciality you can think of. I came to SASH with several areas of interest and it exposed me to so many different departments and ultimately helped consolidate my love of surgery. Doing an internship at such a big hospital means you meet so many different people with so many different perspectives and who have come from so many different paths. I am lucky to still be able to ask for advice from wonderful mentors I found at SASH. I also made some really close, life-long friends, particularly in my fellow interns

As the inaugural Tuggerah intern, all I can say is that I absolutely loved my first rotating intern year. There were a diverse range of cases around surgery, medicine, oncology, ophthalmology and emergency that I kept myself busy with. There were always opportunities to spend time at the North Ryde hospital also, attending journal clubs and specialist presentations or just spending additional time on the floor. The team were awesome and easy to get along with, and this initial intern year opened doors into a surgical specific internship, and later surgical residency

The SASH rotating internship program was a great way to gain experience in all specialties. It was well organised including multiple journal clubs, opportunities to ask questions and I felt I was able to play a valuable role in providing gold standard veterinary care. I spent my elective rotation in ophthalmology and I feel the knowledge and connections I gained from working with the SASH team helped to lead to my current position as an ophthalmology resident. Most importantly, I made lifelong friends during my time there. I highly recommend this program for any vets wanting to specialise or just improve their GP skills by learning from very approachable and knowledgeable staff.

Being a rotating intern at SASH was a great experience both professionally and personally - I built greater confidence in various disciplines that I would not have been exposed to otherwise. I found my time in internal medicine, neurology, emergency, and ophthalmology especially allowed me to develop skills and thought processes that I would not have been able to in my general practice job. I came out being quite interested in the field of radiology, which eventually allowed me to take up a radiology specific internship. I overall feel better prepared for daily clinical practice with a solid foundation to build on. I also made great friends and developed strong collegial relationships which I am grateful for.
