In July of 2025, we noticed that there were some ruffled around the left side of Skye’s little head. We assumed that he was just having a bad feather day, but around four days later he was still ruffled.
We knew something was wrong when the feathers around his ear became discoloured, and he was scratching frequently.
We reached out to SASH North Ryde, and were placed under the care of Dr Orr Cohen and the exotics team. It was found that Skye’s ear was swollen shut, and he was diagnosed with an outer ear infection.
Skye’s ear was cleaned under general anaesthesia, and he was started on anti-bacterial ear drops and oral (beak) antibiotics.
Even though we were scared for Skye and overwhelmed, we were reassured by the confidence of the team and the gentleness with which they treated us and Skye.
When we struggled to hold Skye still for his medications at home, he was able to stay at SASH in medical boarding for a few days. He received the medications he needed and recovered, and we were given little updates and daily pictures of Skye that made our day.
After around a week Skye was given the all clear and came home, and he was back to his happy self. If anything, I think Skye’s time at SASH made him braver, as he came home with an adventurous, “I can handle anything” attitude.
We are beyond grateful to the team at SASH for their transparent, competent and reassuring care which allowed us to feel safe and supported even while being so worried for little Skye.
