Katherine : Herbert

Herbert is the laziest dog, ever! He doesn’t jump, climb or ever try to do anything that a Dachshund shouldn’t do. However, this fateful afternoon, he simply rolled over in his bed and injured his back. My husband was luckily home and saw it happen and put him straight in the crate, when I got…

Herbert is the laziest dog, ever! He doesn’t jump, climb or ever try to do anything that a Dachshund shouldn’t do. However, this fateful afternoon, he simply rolled over in his bed and injured his back. My husband was luckily home and saw it happen and put him straight in the crate, when I got home 3 hours later, Herbert had no movement in either of his back legs.

A quick trip to our local vet, Herbert’s bladder was emptied manually, and we were told to head straight to SASH Adelaide, with our vet ringing through the details.

We met with the spinal surgeon and she said that they’d take him in for a CT scan, but if that didn’t show anything then he’d go for a MRI. The surgeon rang to advise that the CT scan showed the disc rupture between his T11 and T12 vertebrae and we gave our approval for Herbert to go straight in to surgery.

After a very long and stressful 4 hours, the surgeon rang to say that the surgery had been a success.

Since his surgery, Herbert thinks he’s invincible and trying to convince him otherwise is an on-going challenge. He’s been allowed to build up the duration of his walks, and he has his exercises to do, thanks to his physio appointments, also at SASH, which he loves because he gets treats! And as everyone knows, the way to a Dachshund’s heart is through unwavering love and lots and lots of treats (also, he gets to wear goggles!).
