Our girl Knives is a 13 year old sassy lady. She’s usually a big lover of her food and incredibly social. My husband and I have always joked about her willingness to go with anyone who gives her attention. When she stopped eating and drinking, and started hiding under the bed, we knew something was wrong.
Our vet treated her the best he could. She had an enema to clear the blockage in her bowel and was given medication to make her feel better. He suspected that she had megacolon but he was also worried that it could be neurological. When her condition didn’t improve, our vet recommended we take her to SASH. This was in September 2025.
We could not have been happier with the way SASH Western Sydney looked after Knives and us. Dr Cheryl, Dr Alex and all the nursing and reception staff were incredibly lovely and reassuring. This was huge because we had never been through anything so scary as pet parents. My husband was especially touched that Dr Cheryl got down on the floor to examine Knives. We’d never seen a vet do this before and it meant a lot.
We spent about week in and out of hospital. We really appreciated the option to visit her at any time and it was great to hear the impression our girl had made on the staff. Apparently, she had taken on the role of an emotional support cat who was always ready for cuddles. We were told repeatedly that she was a wonderful patient too!
It is a relief to finally have an answer. Our poor girl has inflammatory bowel disease which thank goodness, is manageable. My husband has since been in regular email contact with Dr Alex about reducing her medication.
While she’s back to her sweet social self, we’ve noticed that she’s more chatty! We suspect that all of these new opinions are to do with the lack of iPad and classical music at home (apparently this is a given in hospital for the cats hahaha).
She’s had a bit of a decline recently so we’ve just dropped her off with the team. She had an ultrasound and is being treated as I write this. No crying from me this time because I know that she is in the best possible hands.
I cannot thank the team enough for the work that they do for our community! Western Sydney NSW
