Samantha and I went to Christmas Carols at Parramatta Park and on arriving home late, we found Rainbow (timid cat) outside, distraught and nervous, so not her normal self.
Going inside we went to say hello to all the other babies, Chess (cavalier King Charles), Cookies and Cream (two mini lop ear rabbits , aka lagomorphs) and Monty Don (male muscovy duck).
Samantha sat down on the couch and cuddled Cookies, she said that his eye was sore and proceeded to show me, as she is such an observant girl.
Cookies eye was quite red, so I said we’ll see how he is in the morning. I was very worried.
I looked on line for emergency vets near me, finding SASH Western Sydney at Prospect. I rang and explained the situation and was advised to go to SASH North Ryde.

Cookies eye looked worse and it looked like there was a big bubble in the middle of his eye.
We were trying to figure out how it happened and the only conclusion we could come up with was that Cookies chased Rainbow like he always does and terrorised her again.
She likes to sit on the window bed, and Cookies loves to chase her up there via the cat treehouse, now known as “Bad Boys Tower”.
Rainbow must have felt cornered and swiped at Cookies. She normally does this gently, as a warning, but not being there to remove the little terror (aka Cookies), Rainbow must have panicked.
I rang SASH North Ryde, explained the situation and the receptionist, who was lovely, told me to bring him in as an emergency patient.
The receptionist took all my details over the phone to make sure coming into emergency was a smoother process for Cookies.
On arrival, we checked into SASH Emergency and waited until it was our turn. Both Cookies and Cream were interested in their surroundings and poked their heads out of the carrier.
Dr Catherine Thomas came out and explained how SASH worked and took both rabbits in to examine Cookies.
Dr Thomas then came back and brought us into an examination room and explained that she was seeking advice from an ophthalmologist as she believed he was still in the building.
It turned out he was in surgery, so we had to wait a little while, which was perfectly fine, as we were worried about our baby and just wanted all the help we could get for him.
Both bunnies were let free in the examination room to run around, which was really cute and Chess was quite happy just to sit near us.
Dr Thomas came back and brought Cookies medication, two sets of eye drops and some pain relief. We were lucky to book another appointment to see the ophthalmologist on 18 December.

Rainbow got her nails trimmed for the first time in six years. Oh and whilst there her vaccination (as they are important).
18 Dec 2025
We attended SASH and had a consult with Dr James Bryan. He was fantastic!!! Or maybe it was because we got some great news, that Cookies eye was on the mend and needed no intervention!
Actually Dr Bryan was fantastic, he examined Cookies eyes and explained in non medical terms exactly what happened to Cookies eye, so that we could understand. We felt completely comfortable with Dr Brian and had complete trust in his abilities.

Cookies found his testosterone! Attacked Cream! Cream’s ears were bitten like they had been through a shredder! It was absolutely awful. I rang my sister, who is a vet nurse, however she instructs nurses through their courses now. She recommended visiting a vet.
Visited local vet in case of infection.
Both bunnies now on pain relief and medications.

Rainbow came down with an illness, squealing and gagging and very lethargic. Visit to local vet again. Gave her an antibiotic injection. Best thing EVER! No tablet antibiotics for Rainbow for two weeks!!!!!
She wasn’t good a few days later, my BIL messaged me just in case it may have been lungworm. He’s only ever seen a few cases of it but thought to let me know. (Retired vet). Luckily it wasn’t.
30 Dec 2025
Both bunnies got into a shopping bag with avocados in it. Oh and blueberries too!
Both bunnies ended up at the exotic vet for admittance to hospital and charcoal treatment.
Rang SASH and Dr Bryan was lovely enough to change the original appointment to 3.30pm and the receptionist said to keep in touch just in case we needed to reschedule. She couldn’t have been nicer. Samantha and I were so worried.
Bunnies discharged by 2.30pm, raced across metropolitan Sydney to make the appointment, a little bit late.
Cookies eye was BETTER…. yay!!!
Also showed Dr Brian and his nurse Cream’s ears… not for medical purposes just so they could see what cute, loveable Cookies was really like.
SASH staff
The emergency phone staff were terrific, remaining calm and helpful whenever we called.
Reception staff on Level one are always professional and polite. They always made sure it was a peaceful environment and assisted the furbaby parents if their little ones (dogs) were being quite loud and placed them in another room so that all babies were able to remain in a calm environment.
The medical staff, including the mushroom scrubs nurse were so helpful and explained everything on discharge really well.
Samantha also loves the hot chocolate (ground floor reception).
Story to be continued and yes, it does get worse….
