We have a beautiful, cheeky and blueberry obsessed lop eared rabbit called Pluto.
Last year, we noticed our Pluto wasn’t well. He wasn’t eating which is VERY unlike him. As we have no local exotics vet due to living rurally , we didn’t hesitate to drive the 4 hours to take him to SASH North Ryde.
When we got there, it was clear that Pluto wasn’t in good shape and we were all worried for him. Our usually bright and cheeky boy was so quiet. After tests and scans, we discovered that one of his kidneys was severely damaged due to a blockage and would need to be removed.
We had no idea that rabbits could live with only one kidney nor that this kind of surgery was even possible. Of course, there were risks, and because he was so sick there was a chance that he wouldn’t pull through. We knew that his best chance was at SASH and so we decided to hospitalise him and go ahead with the surgery.
Unfortunately due to living so far away, we weren’t able to come down and visit Pluto before his kidney removal surgery, but the amazing nurses kept sending us photos of Pluto having snuggles and getting spoilt which made it so much easier for us to be apart from him.
The surgeon rang us prior to the procedure and talked us through it, answering all of our questions and spoke to us with compassion. We waited eagerly for the call after his surgery and the wave of relief that came over us once we knew he got through it was phenomenal. Pluto had to stay at SASH for a little while longer to recover, but we got phone calls and photos with updates daily.
Now, we bring all of our bunnies down to the team at North Ryde to look after our family. Pluto is doing well, but still likes to conjure something up so he gets to see Dr Melinda and the rest of the staff! Pluto is also very proud to feature in the Exotics mural of past patients! Pluto has had a few more bumps in the road, with another close call, but has been able to pull through!
We can’t thank everyone at SASH enough for what they have done for our bunnies and for saving our Pluto’s life!
