In April 2025 Louie presented to his normal vet with worsening weakness in front legs and difficulty with balancing and standing up/walking without falling to the side.
After blood tests, trying antibiotics and pain relief and getting worse, he was referred to Neurology & Neurosurgery at SASH North Ryde and following more extensive tests was diagnosed with meningioencephalitis. Louie started an aggressive treatment of several prescription medications.
While his neurological symptoms were improving his love of sniffing in bushes caused him to sustain an injury to his eye – a corneal ulcer. His normal vet tried months of experimental plasma treatment /antibiotocs/drops etc but ultimately it was decided he should be seen by a specialist eye doctor at SASH. So after a couple of months of monitoring at SASH it was decided that the best course of action was a corneal graft surgery.
Today, 7 months in from his neuro diagnosis and 3 months on from the corneal graft surgery Louie is doing well.
He is tapering off some of his medication gradually and continuing to make steady progress. You can barely even tell he’s had eye surgery.
I am so grateful for the care we have received and ongoing care that we continue to receive in his healing journey.
