Prof Peter Irwin

Prof. Peter Irwin is a highly accomplished veterinarian, researcher, and registered specialist in canine medicine. A graduate of the Royal Veterinary College, London University, he earned his PhD from James Cook University for the studies into canine babesiosis. Prof. Peter is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and has completed residency training at the University of Melbourne, including placements at Cornell University, North Carolina University, and Massey University.

With more than 35+ years of experience as a clinical academic in Australia and overseas, Prof Peter has taught companion animal medicine and conducted extensive research in veterinary parasitology and medical microbiology. An internationally recognized expert in vector-borne diseases, his current research explores tick-borne infections affecting companion animals, wildlife, and humans in Australia. Prof. Peter also holds the esteemed title of Emeritus Professor at Murdoch University, reflecting his lasting contributions to veterinary science. Prof. Irwin’s clinical focus includes neurology, infectious diseases, and parasitology.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Prof Peter is a devoted father to two young boys, whose activities keep him on his toes. To stay active, he enjoys swimming and nurturing his lifelong interests in classical music and entomology—an unexpected but fascinating combination! At home, he shares his life with Cosmo, a lively Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Olive, his much-loved elderly cat.
