Specialist in Emergency & Critical Care
Dr Sarah Purcell graduated from the University of Queensland in 2006 and realised her passion for emergency and critical care whilst working at James Cook University. In 2012 she relocated to Perth where she undertook a residency in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at Murdoch University. During this time, she gained membership with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in both Surgery as well as Emergency & Critical Care.
In 2015, Sarah became a board-certified Specialist with the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, followed by the completion of her Master’s in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2016. Since 2017, she has been sharing her expertise as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland.
From 2022 to 2024, she dedicated her time to the clinical management of critical care patients at an Emergency Specialist Hospital in Brisbane. In 2025, Dr Sarah joined SASH to be part of the Gold Coast’s only full-time, specialist-led Emergency & Critical Care team.
Her clinical interests include transfusion medicine, electrolyte imbalances, emergency ultrasound, and intravenous fluid therapy.
Outside of work, she enjoys running and cross-fit and loves spending time with her two young children and her cat, Evey.
