Specialist in Emergency & Critical Care
Dr Mara Hickey started her career as an Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Assistant and then later as a Veterinary Technician in the USA. Following this, Mara completed her studies at the University of Wisconsin to become a veterinarian. Mara then worked as an Emergency and Critical Care Intern at both Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital and UC Davis. She completed her residency at the Advanced Critical Care of Los Angeles before becoming Director of Emergency and Critical Care at the Animal Emergency Medical Center in California.
In 2015, Mara left the USA to start her Australian career at the University of Sydney, where she headed the Emergency and Critical Care Unit while training future veterinary specialists. Between 2018 and 2022, Mara worked as a consultant for the Australian Defense Force’s Army Special Operations Canine Unit. More recently, Mara joined the SASH Western Sydney team, while also working as a teleconsultant for VetCT. Mara’s professional interests include trauma, acid-base & electrolyte disturbances, and antimicrobial stewardship.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery novels, weightlifting, travelling, and napping. Her pets include Pumpkin, a wolfhound/bull Arab mix, as well as 3 cats; Licorice, Truffles, and Pepper.
