Dr Julia Sumner

BVSc (Hons I), MANZCVS (Surgery), DACVS-SA

Specialist in Surgery

What does this mean?

Dr Julia obtained her veterinary degree from the University of Sydney in 2001. Following graduation, she spent several years as a mixed and small animal general practitioner before following her dream to specialise in surgery. After completing a general and surgical internship at another referral hospital in Sydney, she was accepted into an internship program at Kansas State University in the USA. She then completed a 3-year surgical residency at the University of Wisconsin.

Julia became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2012. She has served as a faculty member in Small Animal Surgery at Louisiana State University (4 years) and Cornell University (6 years) where she developed a special interest in minimally invasive techniques (e.g. laparoscopic surgery). Julia is a member of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society (VES), the Veterinary Interventional Radiology and Interventional Endoscopy Society (VIRES) and the Veterinary Society of Oncologic Surgeons (VSSO). Her love of teaching and of veterinary medicine have led to over 30 publications in the field.

She has returned to Sydney from upstate New York with her husband, 2 kids and their very spoilt cat Mia who was adopted from Louisiana. Mia, who is now very well-travelled, is looking forward to settling in Sydney and living out her days in the sun.
