Following this she stayed on at the university as an anaesthesia registrar allowing her to hone her skills and knowledge in critical care medicine. During this time Jo completed a Masters in Veterinary Studies and became a member of the Small Animal Medicine and Emergency & Critical Care Chapters of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. After completion of a residency in small animal medicine and becoming a registered specialist, she was appointed as a lecturer in this subject. Jo is interested in all areas of internal medicine, particularly infectious disease, immunology, haematology and critical illness and has completing a PhD investigating feline breed susceptibility to infection with environmental fungi.

To broaden her skills, Jo has also completed residency training in Emergency and Critical Care at SASH to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care, making her one of the only vets in Australia to be double boarded in both Internal Medicine and Emergency & Critical Care.
